Baltimore Orioles: Offseason Moves, Loss of Burnes, and 2025 Outlook

The 2024 season disappointed many Orioles fans, as the team, which had high hopes of making a deep playoff run, fell short. To make matters worse, they lost their ace, Corbin Burnes, who was traded away during the offseason. This leaves a hole at the top of their rotation heading into 2025, but they've still made key moves to remain competitive. Here's a look at their offseason and what we can expect next season.

Key Acquisitions:

  • Tyler O'Neill (OF): The Orioles made a solid move by signing outfielder Tyler O'Neill to a three-year deal. O'Neill adds power and speed to the outfield, though health has been a concern in recent seasons. If he can stay on the field, he brings the potential to hit 30+ homers, providing a much-needed boost to the lineup.

  • Gary Sánchez (C): The team also signed veteran catcher Gary Sánchez to a one-year contract. Sánchez brings a power bat to the lineup, which is precisely what the Orioles need. While his defense remains a question, his offensive upside gives the Orioles some much-needed depth at a position that was a bit thin last year.

Strengths:

  • Offensive Firepower: With additions like O'Neill and Sánchez, the Orioles' offense remains a strength. The team's core of Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle, and Adley Rutschman still gives them one of the most dynamic lineups in baseball. Expect Mountcastle to continue his solid production and Rutschman to continue developing into one of the best catchers in the game. The addition of O'Neill adds a power element that could make the lineup even more dangerous.

  • Farm System Depth: The Orioles' farm system is stacked. Mayo is just one of many players ready to step in and make an impact. The future looks incredibly bright in Baltimore, and the team has the luxury of adding top-tier talent to their major league roster as they continue to develop. Rodriguez, Westburg, and Heston Kjerstad could all be part of the 2025 squad, adding even more potential to an already strong team.

  • Bullpen Strength: The Orioles' bullpen remains one of the best in baseball, with arms like Felix Bautista, Yennier Cano, and Dillon Tate anchoring the back end. Their depth and ability to lock down games in tight situations give them a clear edge when closing out victories.

Weaknesses:

  • Loss of Corbin Burnes: Corbin Burnes' trade is a significant blow to the Orioles' pitching staff. Burnes was the ace of the rotation and an anchor for the team. His departure leaves a gaping hole at the top, with Kyle Bradish and Dean Kremer now expected to carry more of the load. Grayson Rodriguez is scheduled to take on a more prominent role, but his development may take time. While the Orioles have good depth in their rotation, they will need someone to step up and fill the void left by Burnes.

  • Inconsistent Defense: While the offense and bullpen are strengths, the Orioles' defense can be erratic. Players like O'Neill will need solid defensive contributions, but the team still relies on some young players to continue improving on the field. If they can clean up the mistakes and make routine plays, it could go a long way toward helping them stay competitive in 2025.

Predictions:

  • Offensive Production: The Orioles' offense will continue to be one of the best in the league, with O'Neill providing some much-needed power. Mountcastle and Rutschman will continue to be consistent contributors, with Rutschman likely taking another step forward as a future MVP candidate. The team should hit around .250.

  • Rotation Stability: The rotation, now led by Bradish, Kremer, and Rodriguez, should continue to perform as a solid mid-tier rotation. While not elite, they have enough depth to get by and keep the team in games. Expect a team ERA around 4.00.

  • Record: The Orioles will finish 2025 with a record of 87-75. With their offense and bullpen in good shape, they'll stay competitive in the AL East, but the loss of Burnes leaves them just short of actual contention. They'll still be in the mix for a wild card spot but may fall short of winning the division.

Offseason Grade: 76/100

The Orioles didn't make a splash this offseason, and the loss of Corbin Burnes certainly stings. However, they've made a few key acquisitions, and with a stacked farm system, the future remains bright. The addition of O'Neill and Sánchez helps, but they'll need internal growth and some luck with health to stay competitive in the tough AL East. With their current roster, the Orioles are a good team, but they're still a couple of moves away from truly contending for a championship in 2025.
